Legal Counsel Digital & IT

You’ll be part of the Group Legal Digital & Privacy Office team (‘GLDPO’) and working at Aegon’s headquarter (Aegon Corporate Center), which is based in the Netherlands (currently in The Hague, but soon at WTC Schiphol Airport). We’re looking for a legal counsel focusing on legal matters related to digital and IT to join our team. The Legal Counsel Digital & IT will be responsible for providing legal advice and guidance on digital rules and regulations applicable to Aegon Ltd., while supporting Aegon’s business units globally. You’ll also act as the lead legal counsel for our internal IT organization (Global Technology Services ‘GTS’) for all legal matters.

The position will report to the Head of Group Legal Digital & Privacy Office

Role and Responsibilities

• Legal Advisory

Provide legal advice and guidance on legal matters related to the digital domain, including cybersecurity, privacy, artificial intelligence, and data to Aegon Ltd., while also supporting Aegon’s business units globally in these areas.

Provide legal advice and guidance on various legal and regulatory matters to our internal IT organization (‘GTS’). You’ll act as lead legal counsel for GTS for all legal matters.  

• Compliance

Monitor and keep oversight of digital rules and regulations applicable to Aegon Ltd. and Aegon’s business units globally. To ensure Aegon Group’s operations remain compliant with digital rules and regulations across multiple jurisdictions. Understand and analyze digital rules and regulations for those jurisdictions where Aegon has activities. Create and/or support the creation of impact assessments for (new) rules and regulations in the digital domain. For these activities you’ll work very closely with our Group Compliance and Group Legal departments.     

• Oversight

Develop and maintain oversight mechanisms to ensure Aegon Ltd. and Aegon’s business units globally adhere to all digital rules and regulations applicable to all our businesses globally. Provide guidance on new digital rules and regulations and/or standards.

• Cross functional and stakeholder collaboration

Work closely and build up strong relationships with IT, Data Management, Information Security, Risk, Procurement Legal, Compliance and other relevant stakeholders. Building up strong relationships with Aegon’s business units globally is also key.  

About what we are looking for

Education:

• LL.M. Degree required. Additional qualifications (e.g. post-master) in IT law, digital law, cyber security and/or privacy are a plus.
• Certification(s) from the IAPP are a plus

Expertise and Knowledge:

• Professional experience of 5-8 years in private practice (law firm) or in an in-house role at a (preferably international) large corporate
• Experience in the field of digital rules and regulations, privacy law and/or IT law  

Competencies

• Understanding (or able to understand and learn quickly) global laws and regulations in the digital domain (e.g. cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, privacy, data). Ability to quickly analyze legal requirements and transform them into practical and actionable advice, guidance and policy to internal and external audiences
• Creative thinker and able to support innovation while still managing risk
• Developed drafting and presentation skills
• Motivated self-starter with ability to excel at getting things done, even with many things on your plate
• Strong analytical capabilities and written and oral communication skills. Attention to detail is a must without losing the bigger picture
• Very good planning, prioritization and goal setting skills
• Structured  
• Exceptional interpersonal skills with proven experience in relationship building and partnering; must work well in both team and individual settings
• Fluent in English; mastery of Dutch is an asset but not a requirement
• Good sense of humor and fun to work with!

• Compensation levels depend on an applicant’s qualifications and will be determined by hiring supervisors/managers and HR
• A healthy balance between working in and out of the office. And the possibility to work from abroad temporarily (in agreement with your manager)
